The original idea was to take advantage of the sun and go climbing at the Gerstelflue. So off to Waldenburg with the train, and up, up to the ruin. We opt to continue on the hiking path instead of doing the ridge since we both really want to climb. So along the trail (been quite a while since we did this bit of trail!) we go to p810. There is some climbing here on the Spitzenflue, but that's not today's plan. On with the gear and then onto the ridge for a bit of Gerstelgrat fun. We aren't quite sure where the climbing routes are, so we so some scouting along the way until we're sure that we've reached the routes at the Bohrhakenwändli. Still no sun, so we take a food break after checking out the very cool wall where the Drachenloch is.
Still no sun after lunch and it's not really feeling warm enough to climb, so we decide to just continue along the ridge and switch over to hike mode (hike with extra weight in the packs!). Along the way we check out the routes in the sector Wintergarten and decide to do the single pitch Gerstelfloh (4c) in the approach shoes. Otherwise normal Gerstelgrat fun (at this point the sun is even shining... we started an hour or so too early!). At the end we pack up the gear, have another food break, and then continue along the ridge to Lauchweid. Here it's down, down, under the impressive Geissflue, through the woods, then across fields until we get to Eptingen and the bus back home.
It was a bit of a random day, but it was nice to be outside, and super nice once the sun finally came out. We definitely need to go back and do some actual climbing there.
